Discovering, Preserving, and Celebrating the Culture
Save Our African American Treasures: A National Collections Initiative of Discovery and Preservation, is a collaboration among cultural institutions, community leaders, and the public to preserve and collect African American material culture.
Discovering, Preserving, and Celebrating the Culture aims to assist in the identification and preservation of material culture important to moments in American history. Objects that speak to critical moments in our history reside in the homes of families and community institutions around the country — some are yet to be discovered and some may slowly deteriorate due to inadequate conservation.
In order to assist in this effort, NMAAHC provides informational tips on caring for your personal treasures.
Saving African American Sacred Spaces
Prompted by the destruction by fire of Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church in January 2006, the museum has sought ways to alert the local community to the conservation issues endangering their heritage.
StoryCorps Griot
This year-long initiative will strive to gather and preserve the life stories of African American families by recording their oral histories.
Collaboration
Save Our African American Treasures requires a joint effort of collaboration and provides opportunities for all partners and audience members to benefit.
